Marine Insurance and the BRI: Opportunities, Risks and Challenges

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) conceived and launched by President Xi Jin Ping in 2013 presents an unprecedented opportunity for partnership between law and business, knitting together roughly 65 countries spanning across Asia and Europe. The BRI consists of two major segments: The New Silk Road Economic Belt, featuring a host of land-based trade and infrastructure projects, and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, encompassing ocean-based infrastructure including shipping lanes, ports and other facilities across the  sia-Pacific region.

It is reported that over 20 countries along the route have begun negotiating insurance agreements necessary to cover various economic activities. Exponential growth, and consequent demand for insurance, is expected as new contracts between the Mainland and countries along the Belt and Road corridors are formalised.

Insurance and assessments of risks are extremely important considering the complex political, economic and cultural landscape in countries along the BRI. Accurate risk assessment is important for all stakeholders, be it assureds, insurers or reinsurers.

This upcoming seminar on Marine Insurance will seek to discuss the following :
• Opportunities and challenges the BRI presents for the Marine Insurance industry
• Marine risks and claims management – legal and practical challenges in assessing and managing risks and claims within the BRI
framework
• Sophistication of the marine insurance industry in insuring BRI related risks and dealing with claims arising

Join Mr Mohan Subbaraman, Managing Director of Resource Law LLC and Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime & Shipping Law and his multi-disciplinary panel of speakers in an informative and engaging dialogue.
