ECC-SAL International Virtual Mooting Competition 2021

The ECC-SAL International Virtual Mooting Competition 2021, coorganised by the members of Essex Court Chambers (ECC), and the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL), in partnership with Opus 2 and the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC), presents an ideal opportunity for young lawyers to showcase and hone their skills as advocates. 

 

The Competition is open to young advocates from Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore and South Korea.

 

This year, for the first time, all rounds of the Competition will take place online using Opus 2’s market-leading virtual hearing platform, and will replicate the challenges currently faced by advocates around the world.

 

DATES OF THE 2020 COMPETITION

 

The preliminary rounds of the Competition are scheduled to take place on a round-robin basis, with each team participating in a minimum of two moots:

 

• Round 1: Tuesday, 5 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

 

• Round 2: Wednesday, 6 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

The remaining rounds will take place on an elimination basis:

 

• Quarter-Finals: Tuesday, 12 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

 

• Semi-Finals: Wednesday, 13 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

 

The Final will take place on Thursday, 14 January 2021 at 6:00pm SGT.

ELIGIBILITY

 

Lawyers and legal service officers who have been qualified for practice for no more than three years as at 1 January 2021 are welcome to register their interest.

 

Teams may comprise mooters from the same or different law firms and organisations, with each participating firm or organisation asked to submit no more than two teams.

 

A reserve list of teams will be compiled in the event that more than two teams apply from the same organisation. The organisers will consider all relevant circumstances in each jurisdiction when interpreting the eligibility criteria, and the organising committee reserves the right to exercise discretion for its decisions.

 

HOW TO REGISTER

 

Please send an email to the contact persons below with the following information:

 

• Subject Header: “Mooting 2021 Registration”

• Registrants’ full names

• Firm (s)

• Dates of admission

• Email addresses

• Contact numbers

 

Two team places will be reserved for each jurisdiction. Registration closes at 1800 SGT (i.e. UTC+08:00) on 1 November 2020 or when a total of 32 teams have been registered for the Competition, whichever is earlier.

Competition Dates:

Round 1: Tuesday, 5 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

Round 2: Wednesday, 6 January 2021 at 5:30pm SGT

The remaining rounds will take place on an elimination basis:
