Building and Construction Law Course for Legal and Industry Practitioners

The Singapore Academy of Law’s Specialist Accreditation Scheme confers recognition of a legal practitioner’s expertise and experience in a specialised area of law.

 

SAL offers a preparatory course for candidates required to sit for the examination prior to the specialist accreditation. The course is open to all legal and industry practitioners as well. Priority will be given to candidates of the accreditation scheme.

 

It is assumed that candidates and practitioners who register for the course have knowledge in Building and Construction law expected of a 5-year PQE legal practitioner. Industry practitioners should have at least a degree in Architecture or equivalent or a BCA Certificate in Construction Law and Contracts as this is not a basic course.

 

COURSE DATES

 

The course in Building and Construction Law comprises 27 contact hours of classroom instruction, conducted over three weekends: Friday (full day) and Saturday (morning) half-day on 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28 July 2018.

Module 1: Introduction

Module 2 Contract Documents & Risk Management

Module 3: Time for Completion

Module 4: Variations

 

20-21 July 2018

Module 5: Payment Regime

Module 6: Security of Payment

 

27-28 July 2018

Module 7: Subcontracting

Module 8: Termination

Module 9: Handover and Post-Completion Issues

Module 10: Dispute Resolution

 

All modules except the Introduction will be followed by tutorials.

 

Course participants will receive an electronic certificate of participation at the end of the course so long as they attend at least 80% of the course.

 

Candidates are advised to register for the course once their candidature is confirmed to avoid disappointment. Reservations are on a first-come-first-served basis. Reservations are confirmed only when candidates have registered and made payment for the course.

 

Course attendance is not compulsory. Candidates are free to self-study or attend other relevant courses to prepare for the examination.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

 

Learners who wish to utilise their SkillsFuture Credit (SFC) to offset the course fees need to note the following.

 

1. WEF 21 April 2017 – Learners can submit their claims 60 days before event start date instead of 30 days

 

2. WEF 19 May 2017 - Learners have one option of payment i.e. amount deducted from learner’s SFC, will be disbursed to SAL directly.

 

3. Learners who wish to utilise their SFC to offset the course fees need to submit a print screen of their SFC balance and notify SAL by emailing accreditation@sal.org.sg on how much they wish to use.  

 

Onus is on the learner to submit the actual balance of their SFC account to SAL. Whatever the balance payment amount may be, learners need to pay in full before their registrations are processed and confirmed.

 

4. The refund policy is as follows:

 

30-45 days prior to start of course: 75% of course fee

8-29 days: 50% of course fee

7 days or less: No refund

 

5. Learners will be responsible to cancel any submitted SFC claims before the course start date (due to their own cancellation/deference reasons).
